cieeBaltimoreRetina423x296The 2014 CIEE Annual Conference provided a great space for learning and networking as InteRDom representatives joined more than 500 international education professionals for the second consecutive year, discussing ideas and attending panels surrounding the conference’s theme, “Breaking Barriers: Cost. Curriculum. Culture,” held in Baltimore, Maryland, from November 21-22, 2014.

InteRDom representatives attended presentations on many topics, from technological barriers, to local synergies in cinema, politics, and study abroad and increasing study abroad access for all. The conference also introduced a new and important topic that is gaining more exposure in the international education field; discussing accessibility of study abroad to students with disabilities and new strategies for inclusion that was very interesting and informative for the InteRDom representatives. The information obtained from this conference will serve to enhance and diversify InteRDom’s services and programs in order to provide the highest quality experience possible to all future students.

In addition to the networking and presentations provided at the conference, InteRDom representatives attended the annual luncheon featuring a fascinating talk given by award-winning journalist, author and NPR Host and Special Correspondent, Michele Norris, who spoke about how we define race and diversity in America, and questioning traditional definitions and assumptions through her Race Card project. CIEE also surprised attendees with a special gift of her first published book on the topic, The Grace of Silence: A Memoir.
The conference sponsor, Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), is a leading international education provider which hosts more than 35,000 people a year on study, work, volunteer and travel programs in hundreds of locations all over the world. The experience it has acquired in its 60 years of organizing programs fosters exchange, global competence and understanding and is a very important partner for InteRDom.

InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.photo 1 photo 2
