Justine has completed her first year of study at the Unive<\/span><\/i>rsit<\/span><\/i>y of Georgia School of Law<\/span><\/i> and is one of three students participating in the 2012 pilot of the InteRDom Correspondent Program. <\/span>She<\/span><\/i> is participating in the 2012 10-w<\/span><\/i>eek Graduate and Gap Year Program.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

So, the time is finally here and I couldn\u2019t be any more excited\u2014my journey to Santo <\/span>Domingo, Dominican Republic begins tomorrow! It see<\/span>ms completely unreal as I’ve been dreaming about <\/span>visiting the DR ever since I can remember, and tomorrow, thanks to InteRDom, my dream becomes re<\/span>ality. Through InteRDom, I will be able to <\/span>combine my interests in both the legal profession and the Spanish language through an internship in t<\/span>he legal department at a large, private <\/span>Dominican insurance company. Although I’ve been studying Spanish for the last eight years, I have yet to tra<\/span>vel to a <\/span>Spanish-speaking country so this is a huge milestone for me!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Once in the Dominican Republic\u2014in addition to <\/span>interning of course\u2014I plan on ta<\/span>king in as much of the culture as possible (which, <\/span>for me, largely means food!). I cannot wait to try authentic <\/span>mofongo<\/i>, a frie<\/span>d plantain dis<\/span>h stuffed with various meats, and mang\u00fa<\/i>, a boiled plantain dish, us<\/span><\/span>\"\"<\/a><\/span>ually served for breakfast. <\/span><\/span>The program recommends that we don’t eat street food for health purposes, so I\u2019ll be<\/span><\/span> sticking to the cuisines of established restaurants to fulfill this desire. Besides eating, I plan on <\/span><\/span>travelling throughout the entire<\/i> island. (After all, when again will I be able to do such extensive travelling?). The first place that I want to visi<\/span><\/span>\"\"<\/a><\/span>t is pretty touristy\u2014Boca Chica, the beach nearest Santo Domingo. I\u2019ve done some research on Boca Chica and found that in addition to the immaculate white sands, the depth of the crystal clear water rarely changes and there are no waves. Sounds like paradise to me!

Lastly, in addition to interning, eating, and travelling (by now, you\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cwhat else will you have time for?!\u201d), I am really hoping to enroll in bachata<\/i> and merengue<\/i> lessons so that I can develop a new talent to show off once back in the States. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While I could go on forever, my flight leaves bright and early at 7 AM, so that\u2019s it for now. Once I am settled into my Dominican apartment, I will update you all on my travels. Stay tuned because I will be blogging about every bit of this once-in-a-lifetime experience! Ciao!<\/span><\/p>\n
