Weekly Update—Final Cultural Excursion and Closing
Ceremony Santo Domingo, August 10, 2010
The 2010 InteRDom Summer Program
officially came to a close last Thursday, August 5th
with the closing ceremony at Casa de Teatro in Santo
Domingo’s historic colonial zone. The interns and their
internship supervisors and friends shared appetizers and
stories at the gathering, organized by InteRDom to bring
together all of the interns and the people who
influenced their time in the Dominican Republic for one
last time. The highlights of the evening included a
slideshow of photographs from the whole summer and a
deejay playing plenty of salsa and meringue tunes to
dance to.
Just two days later, on Saturday August 7th, the interns
participated in the final cultural excursion of the
summer to the eastern part of the island. The day began
with a tour of the “Cueva de las Maravillas,” a 800
square-meter cave featuring some of the oldest and most
significant cave drawings left by the Taino indigenous
tribes in the region. After a hearty lunch in La Romana
they then traversed the grounds of the Casa de Campo
resort to arrive at Altos de Chavon, a small village
modeled after a 16th-century Mediterranean town. Altos
de Chavon features a museum on pre-colonial history as
well as the nation’s largest art and fashion school. It
is an artistic center, and home to a large 5,000-seat
amphitheater.
