The Dominican Republic forms part of a group of countries that have transformed their economies through the employment of new technologies. The nation has one of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructures in Latin America, boasting extensive mobile phone and landline services. Wireless Internet access in now available in many locations in Santo Domingo. The country has eight major Internet service providers: Codetel, Claro, Tricom, Aster, VIVA, France Telecom, One Max and Wind Telecom. Its digital cable providers Telecable Nacional and Wind Telecom broadcast 46 television channels.

Students interested in carrying-out internships in information and communications technology may apply to be part of a research project involving more than 300 radio stations, 40 television channels, various telecommunication companies, diverse universities and important technology enterprise incubators.

Students may also become involved in projects with the Instituto Tecnológico de las Américas (ITLA – Technological Institute of the Americas), which offers national and international academic programs in innovative areas like: Mechatronics, Multimedia, Information Technology, Software Development and Digital Journalism Programs. ITLA is the number one school for technology in the Caribbean.

There is a need within the industry to identify niches for the application of new technologies. Further research and development is required regarding how technology can be better harnessed to improve the living standards of residents throughout the country.
