Over the course of the last 25 years, the economy of the Dominican Republic has transformed from an economy predominantly dependent on the export of agricultural products – sugar, coffee, cacao and tobacco – and to a smaller extent the export of nickel, gold and silver, to an economy largely reliant upon tourism, telecommunications and the sale of free-trade-zone manufactured products (garments, tobacco, jewelry, medical devises, pharmaceuticals, etc.). Tourism and free-trade manufacturing are presently the fastest growing sectors.
Participation in the Dominican Republic - Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA), put in place in 2007, and strengthened bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries have aided in increasing the nation’s competitiveness and positioning within the global economy. As it relates to economic health, a 2008 World Bank and International Finance Corporation Report placed the Dominican Republic as one of the top ten most important countries in the area of pro-business regulatory reform.
Given the sustainable economic growth characteristic of the last few years, emphasis has been placed on the development of new business strategies that take advantage of the country’s resources and important competitive advantages such as: political and economic stability; fiscal incentives and attractive financing; excellent infrastructure and telecommunications; a highly qualified labor force; and a risk-free operations environment.
Since 2007, as part of its overall mission to expand corporate capacity in the Dominican Republic, InteRDom has annually organized a conference attended by business students, international experts and business incubators designed to stimulate small-business growth, both in terms of numbers and capability.
InteRDom offers internship opportunities to business students interested in developing new business plans, exploring openings in local and international markets, and/or studying possibilities for the sale of Dominican products in the international market. InteRDom works with companies and organizations that conduct work related to: trade agreements, exports and imports, business incubation, small and medium-sized businesses, tourism and information and communication technologies.
